The Soldier's Tale

A fabulous fable enjoyed by numerous children, "The Soldier's Tale," is Stravinsky's greatest work about a soldier who tries to beat the Devil. Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with narration. The story of Joseph, a war-weary soldier who is on his way home to his mother and fiancée when he encounters a stranger who offers him a magical book (that will make him rich) in trade for his old violin.

The music is jazzy, contains marches, a waltz, tango rhythms, very listenable and crisply played. A story about temptation and the danger of giving into temptation. A lesson for all cultures and times.
